The A to Z of Wedding Planning

A is for ANXIETY (or more appropriately “Aaahhhh!!”): Will the dress look okay? Will the cake arrive on time? Will your drunken uncle Wilber pinch all the bridesmaids bottoms? Nobody knows, but one thing is for certain – you’re going to experience bucket loads of anxiety from now and until you finally bid your guests goodnight. Accept it now and you may just get through the experience alive.
B is for BRIDE: It’s your day so don’t let anyone spoil it for you. Make sure you look better than your bridesmaids by making them wear peach. It works every time.
C is for CAKE: Why is so much money spent on something so few eat? Avoid those horrible three tiered icing-sugar monstrosities and opt for something your guests will actually appreciate – tiramisu anyone?
D is for DRINK (and lots of it!): Let’s face it. Women get more out of weddings than guys do. The only appealing prospect a wedding holds for a man is the opportunity to get nicely tanked up with a few of his buddies. Don’t hold back on the free booze – it’ll ensure you’re still being toasted long after you’ve gone to bed. E is for ELEGANT. Which is how you’ll look. Trust us.
F is for FUN: Remember, your wedding day is meant to be fun. Which it will be once you remember to invite all your guests, book the hotel, hire the band, pay the photographer, choose a menu, pick a dress, etc, etc……..
G is for GENEROUS: Let’s hope your guests are. Sure a toaster is a handy household appliance but it ain’t nothing compared to that Jacuzzi you’ve had your eye on. Which leads us nicely on to….
H is for HINTS: Along the lines of; “I hear Jacuzzis have really come down in price recently. Yeah, one would fit perfectly in our spare room……but anyway, back to my wedding!”
I is for IN-LAWS: Congratulations! You’re now the proud owner of a new mother and father-in-law! In-laws are like a lottery. You could hit the jackpot and inherit in-laws you like. Chances are however, your feelings for them will range somewhere between mild irritation and blind, homicidal hatred.
J is for JAGUAR: arrive at your wedding in style. Hire a jag for the day. Or a Rolls Royce. Or a Ferrari. To hell with it, hire a hot air balloon!
K is for KARATE: It could come in handy should your betrothed decide to ditch you at the altar. Make them suffer!
LOVE: That’s why you’re standing at the altar wearing those silly clothes, remember? Amidst all the chaos, don’t forget to flash your partner a soppy smile and tell them how much you love them.
M is for MUSIC: A good wedding band can ensure your big day remains in your guests’ collective memory for years. Unfortunately, a bad wedding band can ensure the exact same result. Any band which offers to play ‘The Birdie Song’ should immediately be disregarded.
N is for NUTS: which you are for inviting 350 people to your wedding. But there’s no backing out now!
O is for “OH MY GOD!” This phrase will be heard on my occasions. When the bride comes walking up the aisle looking radiantly beautiful. And when her parents see the bill for sending her up there.
P is for PEACH: Remember! The bridesmaids must wear peach!
Q is for QUESTIONS: As in, “how do I organize a wedding?” No-one really knows. Just make it up as you go along.
R is for RELATIONS: this will be the first opportunity many of your relations will have to meet their new in-laws. It could mark the beginning of many life-long friendships. Or life-long feuding. Remove all sharp cutlery from the tables if the latter looks more likely.
S is for SEX: There once was a time when a wedding night was the first opportunity a man and woman had to fully express their love for one another. But being the cheeky little monkeys that you no doubt are, it’s probably nothing new to you. But hey, practice makes perfect, right?!
T is for THRESHOLD: It’s a tradition so get it right. Unacceptable variations on the theme include hitting your bride’s head off the door jam, dropping her on her bum or inflicting a bodily injury of any kind.U is for UNEXPECTED: the bridesmaid will elope with the vicar, the photographer will turn out to be colourblind, the keyboardist will turn out to be Stevie Wonder. Who knows? Just be prepared for anything.
V is for VODKA: keep the best man away from it, at least until his speech is over. We’re sure the stag-party visit to Bangkok was “totally awesome” but we’re also sure that the bride’s parents don’t need to hear about it.
W is WHISKY: ditto.X is for…er, XYLOPHONE: Your wedding band may have one of these. Equally, they may not. (x is a difficult letter, okay?!)
Y is for YAWN: this is exactly what you don’t want to hear during your reception. Remember – yawns are highly infectious. Once one person starts, they’ll spread through the crowd quicker than a case of SARS. Buy the culprit a Red Bull and Vodka immediately and insist that they dance with your great-aunt Maureen as punishment.
Z is for ZZZZZZZZZZ: that’s the sound you’ll be making at the end of your big day. It may have cost thousands of pounds and put you into bankruptcy, but hey, you got through it alive! Congratulations!

The Thirty Year Old Maid

The thirty-something generation is shying away from marriage with a success rate that is beyond belief. This never been married clan seems to know better than us and seem to truly be waiting for the right person; comfortable knowing that should he or she not appear, tragedy will not strike. The majority grew up in single-parent households and phrases like every other weekend and alimony ring differently in their ears. When they think about marriage, the first thing that comes to mind is divorce. Their memories are select and if they aren’t walking wounded, then they are walking scar tissue but either way, they don’t seem to be in a marriage rush, so as to not repeat mistakes. They remember sitting as their moms cried from a place so deep it scared them. They spent time memorizing new addresses and phone numbers for their dads and they listened to all the fighting. And if this isn’t what has kept them from marriage then it must be the guilt to which they are accustomed. There can be few more painful experiences for a young child, than to leave a crying parent standing in the airport or bus stop as he or she leaves to go to the “other parent’s” house for Thanksgiving, Christmas, the summer... you name it. Growing up inside of divorce is not an easy thing to do and it affects the relationship that people have with commitment. Children of divorce are taught that marriage doesn’t work and that is a tough obstacle to overcome. It is hopeful, however. Statistics statistic-ize that generally-speaking, people are getting married later. Which leads me to hypothesize that these unmarried thirty somethings have not abandoned the idea of marriage altogether, but instead are simply making good decisions. Perhaps they know themselves a little better making it easier to share both themselves and their space with another. We could be witnessing the revolution of marriage as a sacred union from the very people who have suffered its collapse. The decision to marry remains a huge decision for most. The word “forever” really throws people off. But maybe now, as the idea of forever becomes something a bit easier to visualize thanks to the deteriorating nature of our world, and with having put many years of thought into the idea, people will get married and stay happily married, sharing old age, a history, a legacy, a life. We search for meaning and often times, we find it in other people. A spouse, a child... What a beautiful gift that is. If you should get invited to a thirty something wedding, go! They have been working for a living and they understand the value of money. Their ceremonies tend to be a bit more humble. The 5-star hotel turns into a Holiday Inn, turns into a Bed and Breakfast and eventually, you’ll be in tents on some beach somewhere. The wedding gowns are simpler, the services shorter (and lots of them are outside) and shoes have been known to be optional.

Some of the world’s more memorable marriages

Here’s one for the romantics. After a tortuously long engagement, Donald and Marla finally waltzed down the aisle in December 1993. The reason for the delay? An inability to agree upon on a pre-nuptial agreement. But then, what else would you expect from the man who once said; “you can’t be too greedy.” Right you are Don, although taking the guests to KFC afterwards was probably going a bit too far….
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor
“Her breasts would topple empires before they withered.” Such were the immortal words of Welsh screen-legend Richard Burton upon glimpsing Elizabeth Taylor for the first time. Chemistry was hardly lacking when the two began a high-profile affair nine years later, while their antics during the filming of Anthony and Cleopatra have gone down in history. The original ‘Posh and Becks’ (only infinitely classier), Burton and Taylor quickly ditched their respective spouses for each other but divorced in 1973 – albeit for only two years. This time however, the passion was running dry and the two divorced again after four months.
Cher and Gregg Allman
Unlike any of her musical offerings, Cher’s marriage to Allman ranks as an all-time classic. Only nine days after saying “I do,” Cher changed her mind to “I don’t” and filed for divorce – apparently fed up with his heroin and alcohol problems. Recounting the marriage later on, Allman said he woke up to next to Cher one morning to hear her utter those all-too familiar words: “I got this Lear jet and Nevada isn’t too far. Why don’t we get married?” It’s a situation we’ve all found ourselves in, but surprisingly it didn’t work out for the musical duo. Nevertheless, the couple kept their relationship going for a further three years, resulting in one dodgy collaborative album and one transvestite son, Elijah Blue.
John F Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier
It began with a papal blessing and bucket loads of glamour. It ended in Dallas with his brains upon her lap. Although this marriage literally lasted until death did them part, Camelot’s fairy-tale wedding was anything but. JFK liked it hot in the form of Marilyn Monroe, Judith Campbell Exner and pretty much any young woman with a pulse, while Jackie had to satisfy herself with oversized sunglasses and remarriage to a Greek shipping magnate.
Charles and Diana
Oh dear, what can we say about this? This car-crash of a marriage (woops, sorry!) was launched on live television in 1981, before an awe-struck public. She ended up a bulimic, publicity-obsessed wreck, while he ended up in his green-house talking to the plants. Says it all really.
Paul McCartney and Linda Eastman
Ah, well this IS nice. He was one of the world’s best song-writers and most eligible bachelors, she was an, er, vegetarian photographer. Okay, it was a slightly uneven match, but that certainly didn’t bother Paul and Linda who struck up one of the world’s most passionate and committed romances. Until her untimely death in 1999, they had slept apart only one night during their marriage. Which almost makes you forgive them for Wings…..almost, that is.
King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson
It’s not every man who’d give up the throne of England - especially for a twice-divorced, debt-laden, Nazi sympathizer – but that’s exactly what Edward VIII did when he abdicated his position after only eleven months in the hot seat. “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do with the support of the woman I love,” explained Edward in a radio broadcast announcing his decision. Assuming the less prestigious title of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the couple moved to the north of France and whiled away the rest of their lives as the ultimate party guests.
Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe
It lasted only nine months, yet it’s still one of the world’s most fondly remembered marriages. Both refused to talk about the marriages, but for twenty years after her death, he continued to have red roses placed upon her grave every day. Enough said.
Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra
He was a cross-dressing basketballer, she was the silicone enhanced star of Baywatch. The fact that it lasted as long as nine days was probably the biggest surprise of all. Only one day after they tied the knot (in Las Vegas – of course), Rodman’s agent suggested the Chicago Bulls’ star had been smashed drunk and claimed she was only in it for the money. Nine days later, Rodman sought an annulment, claiming he was of an unsound mind. Which wasn’t very hard to prove.

Weddings Through the Ages

It's no secret that marriages can be tough work but when you feel the pressure is getting too much for you, cast your mind back to ancient times and be thankful you didn't end up in one of these curious arrangements...........
Polygynous marriages:
This type of marriage involved one husband and at least two wives - the only restriction on how many wives a man could have was how many he could afford. The richer you were, the more wives you could accumulate in your family home. Solomon for instance had 600 wives, Gideon had dozens, Herod the Great had nine, while Jacob had a paltry two (loser!).Although having a large number of wives was seen as a symbol of prestige, it's unknown whether it made any of the aforementioned husbands any happier. Legend has it that the chorus of calls to cut the grass on a Saturday morning was enough to send Herod the Great off on a military expedition for two years at least...Despite being an obvious recipe for migraine, polygynous marriages continue to the present day, courtesy of small, independent Mormon churches. Although the main Mormon Church banned polygynous marriages in the late 19th century, some splinter groups still continue the practice.
Levirate marriages:
Not a particularly nice one this. The term 'levirate' comes from the Latin term 'levir,' or 'brother-in-law.' This type of marriage took place when a woman's husband died before she could bear him a son. In such cases, the widow was then required to leave her home, marry her brother-in-law and have sexual relations with him. Bizarrely, the first-born son from such a relationship was actually considered to have been sired by her dead husband even though all he’d been doing was pushing up daisies.
A man, a woman and her slave:
It may sound like the title of a dodgy blue movie but this was in fact another type of relationship that was popular in ancient times. In such instances, a wife could give her female slave to her husband to do with as he desired. This sometimes took place when the husband and wife were having trouble conceiving, as in the case of Abram and Sarah in the Book of Genesis. In this case, Sarah gave her female slave Hagar to Abram, the result of which was a son Ishmael. Who no doubt needed years of counseling once he learned the beautiful story of his conception.
A man, his wives and his concubines:
Again, it sounds like the title of a naughty top-shelf production, but this was yet another curious type of domestic arrangement. The keeping of concubines was normal practice in biblical times and the not-so-lucky ladies included slaves, women captured during war and the daughters of fathers who taught 10 camels and a male billy-goat was a fair swap. Not content with his 600 wives, our good friend Solomon owned about 300 concubines, while Gideon had at least one. Concubines were considered of a lower status than a wife and could be dismissed when no longer wanted.
Standard heterosexual marriage:
Yes, it did exist! Predictably however, there were a number of differences from the present day. Inter-faith marriages were often forbidden and if they were allowed, the children of such relationships were often considered illegitimate. Similarly, women were expected to be virgins at the time of marriage. The penalty for failing to meet this requirement was stoning, although men faced no such penalty - typical!

The Perfect Honeymoon (on a budget) - 1 of 2

These days, paying for a wedding and setting up a new home can leave many couples with very little cash to spare, especially when it comes to booking the honeymoon. So, for those of you who have stretched your budget to the last, here are a few ideas for a more affordable, yet still romantic, honeymoon.
Instead of asking for wedding presents – ask for money Some couples may feel a bit embarrassed asking guests to give money instead of gifts, but, be assured, many will be glad to do this as it means they can avoid endless trips to the shops trying to find the perfect gift. Money that guests give, can contribute to the honeymoon destination of your choice. Thus, everybody is happy!
Ever thought about swapping homes?Simply, you stay in someone’s house while they stay in yours. For many couples, this could be the perfect money saving option as there is usually very little cost involved. Plus, thousands of people all over the world are interested in swapping homes - so you have an endless choice of where you can go. A good feature of house swapping is that you will get to live like locals, and perhaps make life-long friends too.
Go back to nature For those couples who are young and adventurous, camping could be a memorable occasion – for the right reasons of course! Nights filled with firelight and shooting stars, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, snuggling with your honey in a cocoon of zipped-together sleeping bags – could be jut what any newlywed couple dream of. Yes, camping can be romantic, as long you are well prepared and have the right equipment (warm sleeping bags, a comfortable mattress pad, and a waterproof tent are a must). In addition, it can be extremely cheap - Ј10 to Ј20 per night at most locations. It is even cheaper if you cook your own food. Why not mix a few nights of camping with a few nights in hotels to make your honeymoon more affordable. And do not overlook the rustic (but cheap) cabins available for rent at many state and national parks. Some even offer a honeymoon cabin!
Avoid travelling in the high season For those who choose a spring or autumn wedding, traveling abroad around these times can save you a great deal. Certain destinations can slash their prices by up to 30% during the off-season. And remember, travelling in these times does not necessarily mean enduring wintry weather. Some destinations can have very warm, mild and pleasant weather conditions outside of summer.
Consider your choice of airline carefullyBeing wise to the vast number of discount airlines that operate today can be a blessing in disguise. Travel agents will not search flights with these airlines and so you may end up paying twice the price if you book through an agent. Another important point to remember - be sure to compare rates for alternate airports within a reasonable travelling distance of your honeymoon destination. Consider flying into a smaller airport if you are flying into a big city as smaller airports usually have substantially lower fares, perhaps saving you hundreds of pounds. It also helps to be flexible about your arrival and departure dates; the major travel companies all have options to search for the cheapest flights within a range of dates. Any one of these alternatives could potentially save you hundreds of dollars.
Check budget travel newsletters If time is not on your side and you would like some help with choosing your honeymoon destination - signing up to budget travel newsletters is a good idea. They can contact you with new promotional deals offering deep discounts on airfare and lodging. This way, you avoid missing out on your potential honeymoon of a lifetime.
